What is the definition of “Public Art”? Is it art by the public, for the public, of the public? It could be all of these and more; including why it’s where it is, how it is made and what it might represent. Public art has a varied purpose; it may express community values or enhance the environment. It could transform a landscape, heighten our awareness, or examine our expectations. Art placed in public spaces is there for everyone to enjoy, contemplate and discuss. Public art is a reflection of how some see the world—in the artist’s own perspective to an idea as well as a response to certain subjects, time and places.
As we all know, all art cannot appeal to all people but then again, it shouldn’t. However, art does attract attention, and that’s what we as artists hope for. Public art causes a response; controversy, happiness, anger. These differing opinions are inevitable and we must agree in the long run it is a healthy sign because it proves that what we are striving for is being acknowledged and that is so much better than being ignored.
